Helping Your Child Succeed in Grades 7–10

Continuing Education works with HWDSB elementary and secondary schools to offer after‑school learning programs for students who need extra support.
How These Programs Help
Our programs are designed to help students build skills and confidence. Students learn helpful strategies in a supportive and encouraging environment.
These programs help students better understand the Ontario Curriculum and improve their school success.
Areas of Support
After‑school Literacy and Numeracy programs focus on:
- Reading
- Writing
- Math
- OSSLT Preparation (Grade 10 Literacy Test)
- EQAO Math Preparation (Grade 9 Math Test)

Information for Students / Parents / Guardians
How does it work?
We offer after‑school programs to support students in Grades 7–10.
Available after-school programs include*:
- Grades 7–10 Literacy (support for reading and writing skills)
- Grades 7–10 Numeracy (support for math skills)
- Grade 9 EQAO Math Test Preparation
- Grade 10 OSSLT Literacy Test Preparation
Each program runs for 8 to 12 sessions.
Classes are 1-1.5 hours long and take place after the school day.
Programs are offered throughout the school year, from September to June.
To learn what programs are available at your student’s school, please speak with:
- the Principal (Elementary Schools), or
- the Student Success Teacher (Secondary Schools)
Together, we can support students as they build skills and confidence.
* Please note: Programs are offered based on enough student enrolment.
After‑School Programs Are FREE
Continuing Education Literacy and Numeracy Programs are funded by the Ministry of Education.
These programs support day school learning by offering after‑school or summer classes that help students strengthen reading, writing, and math skills in a focused and supportive environment.
Principals, Vice‑Principals, and school staff work closely with Continuing Education to offer programs that best meet the needs of HWDSB students.

2. Submit a Program Request Form

3. Approval and Student Registration
Once the program is approved by your Principal or Vice-Principal:
- School staff identify eligible students and support registration
- A minimum of 10 students is required to run the program
- Optional curriculum resources are available to support program delivery
Continuing Education works closely with school administrators and staff to support successful program implementation and meaningful learning experiences for students.
